90 Years of Inspiration: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Father Baker

This summer, we commemorate 90 years since the passing of Venerable Nelson Baker on July 29, 1936. Since then, his life of faith, compassion, and service continues to inspire people throughout Western New York and far beyond.

And while much has changed since the 1930s, one thing remains constant: the ministries he built, and the spirit that guided it, remain as vibrant today as ever.

Nowhere was that more evident than during OLV National Shrine & Basilica's recently completed five-year Centennial Celebration. Marking the 100th anniversary of the Basilica's construction and consecration, the celebration welcomed an estimated 1.3 million people to the Basilica for concerts, exhibits, tours, pilgrimages, community events, and Masses. Former parishioners returned home. New visitors discovered the Basilica for the first time. Families created new traditions while reconnecting with one of Western New York's greatest spiritual and architectural treasures.

For many, the Centennial was more than a celebration of a magnificent building. It became a renewed appreciation for the remarkable life and legacy of Father Baker. Visitors not only experienced the beauty of the Basilica he built, but learned about the humble priest whose unwavering faith gave rise to a ministry that transformed countless lives.

That renewed interest has extended well beyond the Centennial itself. New educational initiatives, including a children's biography and a graphic novel created in recent years, have introduced his story to younger audiences and helped ensure that his example of faith and charity continues to inspire future generations.

Father Baker's legacy is not confined to history books or museum exhibits. It lives on every day through the ministries that continue to serve children, families, older adults, and those facing hardship. His vision of a "City of Charity" was never simply about constructing remarkable buildings. It was about recognizing the dignity of every person and responding with compassion, generosity, and hope.

As we commemorate the 90th anniversary of his passing, we are reminded that Father Baker's example remains as relevant today as it was nearly a century ago. His life challenges each of us to look beyond ourselves, to recognize Christ in those who are struggling, and to answer that need with love and practical care.

We invite the entire community to celebrate Father Baker Weekend on August 1-2 at OLV National Shrine & Basilica. The weekend begins with our beloved Jazz Mass on Saturday evening and continues Sunday with the annual Father Baker Day Mass, a special celebration honoring his life and legacy. Families are also invited to enjoy Pennies to Heaven, OLV's cherished summer festival featuring live entertainment, children's activities, food, fellowship, and fun for all ages.

Whether you have been part of the OLV family for decades or are visiting for the first time, we hope you will join us as we honor the extraordinary legacy of Venerable Nelson Baker. As we remember the 90th anniversary of his passing, may we also re-commit ourselves to following his example by serving our neighbors with compassion, extending hope to those in need, and building a stronger community through lives rooted in faith and charity.
